The CUNY School of Professional Studies is building a team of developers to extend the Sahana Disaster Management System. The goal of this project is to expand on the existing functionality of this excellent application to meet the needs of an all-hazards response system for the NYC Office of Emergency Management. Additionally we are seeking to add value to the Sahana global user community, by stringently maintaining the quality and coding standards set forth by the Sahana Developer Community in the hope of having our work accepted by upstream for inclusion in successive Sahana releases.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated, talented application architect to lead our team of programmers and direct the overall design of this exciting application expansion. This position will also serve as the lead developer on the project and is expected to participate in both design and development.

The School of Professional Studies serves New York City`s dynamic marketplace through the provision of timely, innovative and high-quality programs of study. Drawing on CUNY`s nationally and internationally renowned faculty and practitioners, SPS offers graduate and undergraduate certificates and degree programs in a wide range of fields. Specializing in online education, SPS is home to CUNY`s first online Master`s and online Baccalaureate degree programs.
SPS has partnered with the New York City Office of Emergency Management, New York`s premier agency for emergency education, preparation, coordination, and response, to advance and extend the development of the Sahana Disaster Management System. Sahana is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) first developed in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and has been successfully deployed around the world in furtherance of its mission to help alleviate human suffering and help save lives through the efficient use of IT during a disaster.
SPS is seeking a highly motivated self-starter to join our team in the continued development of this exciting and ambitious project.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Application Architect is responsible for managing the application development process and personnel. The incumbent is responsible to and receives general supervision from the Software Development Manager and will:
Analyze and document the existing Sahana application
Design and approve application and database updates and additions as well as QA procedures
Participate in technical documentation of application requirements and installation procedures
Administrate subversion, apply commits, manage branches and tags, and submit patches to upstream
Design and oversee automatic creation of nightly builds
Work with the client to translate functional requirements into technical requirements
Work with the Software Development Manager in setting milestones, sprints and tasks
Lead sprints and manage development, QA and documentation in Trac
Other duties as assigned by the Software Development Manager
Minimum Qualifications
Six years experience in data-centric web application design
Four years experience developing in PHP, Perl, HTML, CSS, XSL/XML and Javascript (Python a bonus)
Three years experience as a manager or lead application developer
Two years experience in FOSS project development, licensing and best-practices
Significant experience developing and working with MySQL databases
Experience administrating and using a version control system (subversion preferred)
Experience working with clients to translate functional requirements into technical requirements
Experience with, and comfortability using, Linux and Apache server technologies
Experience designing and implementing QA, error handling, documentation and testing procedures
High proficiency in database-driven dynamic programming SQL and strong knowledge of DB fundamentals
Must have strong oral and written communication skills
Must be energetic, well organized and patient with a blend of technical and analytical skills, initiative and independence including the ability to make judgment calls and to respond tactfully in all situations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working within an agile development methodology (SCRUM preferred)
Experience with OpenLayers or other geospatial applications
Experience with resource management systems and algorithms
